U.N. Secretary General prepares for visit to Western Sahara

Ross Discusses with Polisario Upcoming Visit of Ban Ki-moon to Western Sahara

ALGIERS – The Polisario Front highlighted the important meeting held on Friday night with the United Nation Special Envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross, as the meeting focused on the coming visit of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the region.

Jatri Aduh, head of the Saharawi negotiating delegation, noted that the meeting was very important, hoping that the visit of Ban will be paid on scheduled time in early March.

Aduh, member of the national secretariat of the Polisario, pointed out that the Saharawi people are confident that a visit of such a high-level official will become an opportunity to revive the cause of Western Sahara and proceed with the settlement of the conflict through holding the desired referendum.

Ross, who arrived on Thursday night at the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf, met on Friday with Sahrawi Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Omar at the Presidency headquarters of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, where they discussed the development of the Sahara issue within UN.

Ross’s visit was the second to the region in the past three months.

The recent visit came days before the Sahrawi people celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic which has been recognized by several countries and is part of the African Union.
